In the former clause, he first clarifies that the bodhisattva's locus of severance is not great, and next clarifies that the Tathāgata's locus of severance is great. In clarifying the bodhisattva, 'there is that which is named nirvāṇa but is not great nirvāṇa' briefly sets it forth; from 'how' onwards explains it, first asking and then resolving. It is explained with two meanings: First, severing afflictions without seeing the buddha-nature, the severance is not ultimate, and therefore it is not called great. Second, because of not seeing the nature, the nirvāṇa obtained has only bliss and purity, but lacks self and permanence; the four meanings not being complete, it is not called great. In clarifying the Buddha below, 'if one sees the buddha-nature, severing afflictions is called great' reverses the first clause; 'because of seeing the nature, it is called permanent and blissful, etc.' reverses the latter clause.
