三總釋陰義，先問次解，六義釋之，能令眾生生死相續，不離重擔。此之二義就過解釋：依之造因，故「令眾生生死相續」；依之受報，故令眾生「不離重擔」。「分散、聚合」，此之二句當義正解，陰是眾義，亦是聚義。分散，眾也；聚合，聚也。細分無量故曰分散，合說為五故云聚合。「三世所攝、求義不得」辯陰性相。陰相無常，故三世攝；陰性虛假，窮本無實，故求不得。「以是」下結。

Third, a general explanation of the meaning of aggregate (skandha); it first asks and then resolves, explaining it with six meanings: being able to cause sentient beings' birth and death to continue, and not departing from the heavy burden. These two meanings are explained in terms of faults: creating causes based on them, they 'cause sentient beings' birth and death to continue'; receiving retribution based on them, they cause sentient beings to 'not depart from the heavy burden'. 'Dispersing and gathering': these two phrases correctly explain the literal meaning; 'aggregate' (yin) has the meaning of 'multitude', and also the meaning of 'accumulation'. Dispersing is the multitude; gathering is the accumulation. Being finely divided into immeasurable parts, it is called dispersing; being collectively stated as five, it is called gathering. 'Encompassed by the three times and seeking its meaning cannot be obtained' distinguishes the nature and characteristics of the aggregates. The characteristics of the aggregates are impermanent, hence encompassed by the three times; the nature of the aggregates is false and unreal, and when probing the root it lacks reality, hence it cannot be obtained. From 'for this reason' onwards concludes.
