Below, the Buddha answers it, first sighing in praise, and then explaining. In the explanation there are two: 1. Discernment of principle as a general answer; 2. From "There are non-Buddhists" onward, answering individually in accordance with the questions. In the general [answer], the initial statement, "This mind is not bound by the fetter of greed," means the nature of the mind is pure; "nor is it unbound" means the characteristic of the mind is defiled. "Not liberated" contrasts with the preceding "not bound," clarifying that it is not that liberation is obtained only upon eliminating obstacles. "Not unliberated" contrasts with "not unbound," clarifying that liberation occurs anew from conditions. The words "not existent" mean that the nature of the mind is fundamentally pure, without bondage or liberation. The words "not nonexistent" mean that through defilement and purity from conditions, there are bondage and liberation. The words "not present, not future" mean that its substance is pure and uniform, free from the three times; it should also have said "not un-past, un-future, un-present," but the text omits it. From "Why" onward explains: because "all dharmas lack intrinsic nature," one therefore must not speak exclusively of determinacy.
