The above was the fifth [section], question and answer discerning the dharma. From here on is the sixth, Vaiḍūrya's expression of understanding. First, he leaps into the air to the height of seven tāla trees; below, he directly expresses his understanding. "Having received your instruction, based on the Great Nirvāṇa I understand hearing and non-hearing" is his personal expression of understanding. Acknowledging the Buddha's prior instruction to him regarding the etiquette of listening is called "having received the Tathāgata's earnest instruction"; acknowledging the Buddha's prior explanation of hearing and non-hearing is called "based on nirvāṇa understanding hearing and non-hearing." "And causing eighty-four thousand bodhisattvas to understand arising and non-arising" expresses understanding on behalf of the assembly. Based on this, one definitely knows that hearing and non-hearing were asked for his own sake, while arising and non-arising were asked for the sake of others. These two are the two kinds of meanings within the previously understood secret treasury.
