From here on is the third, Abhaya requesting an explanation of the meaning of rebirth in the pure land, which the Tathāgata explains for him. In the text there are four distinct parts: First, Bodhisattva Vaiḍūrya concludes the prior and raises the subsequent to initiate it: "I have now understood" concludes the prior; "Abhaya wishes to consult [you]; please grant him permission to listen" raises the subsequent. Second, the Tathāgata grants permission. Third, Abhaya formally asks; he first rises and then asks. The question has four lines: First, "By performing what karma is one born in the realm of Akṣobhya?" asks about the causal merit cultivated by inferior persons. Second, "How do the bodhisattvas in that land achieve wisdom?" and so forth asks about the causal wisdom cultivated by inferior persons; those who are reborn there are precisely called the bodhisattvas of that land. Third, below "Among humans," he asks about the causal merit cultivated by superior persons; this text is somewhat abbreviated, and if complete, should say: "By performing what karma is one born there so as to become an elephant king among humans, possessing great majesty and virtue, and fully cultivating all practices?" Fourth, below "Sharp wisdom," he asks about the causal wisdom cultivated by superior persons; this text is also abbreviated, and if complete, should say: "By performing what karma is one born in that land with sharp, swift wisdom, understanding as soon as one hears?"
