7.78

就初難中，「斷煩惱者名得涅槃，若未斷者名為不得」辯涅槃相，「以是義」下明此涅槃本無今有，「若世間」下彰其無常，類以顯之。初先汎舉，「譬如瓶」下即事以顯，「涅槃若」下約之徵法。

Regarding the first objection, "one who severs defilements is said to attain nirvāṇa; if one has not yet severed them, one is said not to attain it" distinguishes the mark of nirvāṇa; from "by this meaning" downward clarifies that this nirvāṇa was previously non-existent and is now existent; from "if in the world" downward displays its impermanence, demonstrating it by analogy. First he raises it generally; from "for example, a vase" downward he demonstrates it with a concrete thing; from "if nirvāṇa is [like this]" downward he applies it to interrogate the dharma.
