From 'You said that because of causes' onward, it answers the sixth objection: first repeating [the objection] and rejecting it in general, then explaining from 'Why?' onward, first questioning and then explaining. What is the intended meaning of this explanation? It clarifies that great nirvāṇa is not accomplished through the five causes, but is revealed through revealing causes, and is therefore permanent. In this, it first clarifies that it is not accomplished through the five causes, first raising the five causes, then listing and subsequently explaining them. Below, it clarifies that nirvāṇa is not produced by productive causes, but is revealed by revealing causes, first raising the two causes, then listing, and subsequently explaining them. Below, it takes nirvāṇa and distinguishes it in contrast to causes; therein, it first clarifies that the dharma of nirvāṇa is not produced by productive causes, but is revealed solely by revealing causes. Next, it sets forth the revealing causes, namely the thirty-seven factors of awakening and the six pāramitās. Below, it further clarifies the differences in causes by contrasting the great and small of nirvāṇa: giving, keeping the precepts, up to prajñā are causes of nirvāṇa, but cannot be called causes of great nirvāṇa; only the six pāramitās can be called causes of great nirvāṇa. The factors of awakening are likewise: the thirty-seven factors are causes of nirvāṇa, but only the dharmas aiding awakening across immeasurable asaṃkhyeyas can be called causes of great nirvāṇa. These distinctions are explained below in the text itself.
