In the first part, in order to distinguish the two kinds of causes—principle and practice—the two effects must be clarified; in order to distinguish cause and effect, they are spoken of comprehensively in contrast to what is neither cause nor effect, and hence there are five kinds: first is causal nature, which is just the aforementioned principle of dependent origination; second is cause-of-cause nature, which is just the aforementioned contemplative wisdom of dependent origination; third is effect nature, which is the effect produced by the aforementioned contemplative wisdom; fourth is effect-of-effect nature, which is the effect of the aforementioned middle way of dependent origination, because the principle of dependent origination is manifested as an effect; fifth is neither-cause-nor-effect nature, which is the substance underlying the preceding four loci: that substance is spoken of as the preceding four in accordance with conditions, but discarding conditions to approach reality, it is spoken of as the fifth, the neither-cause-nor-effect nature.
