From here below is the third section, on the Śūraṅgama as the nature. First, it extensively distinguishes its characteristics, and then explains the meaning of the name. In the first part there are four sections: first, it explains that the Śūraṅgama is the buddha-nature; second, from "All sentient beings possess..." downward, it explains that sentient beings possess it but do not see it; third, from "The Śūraṅgama has five names" downward, it reveals the different names of the Śūraṅgama and shows that the Śūraṅgama is precisely the buddha-nature; fourth, from "All sentient beings are equipped with the three concentrations" downward, it again explains that sentient beings possess it but do not see it. In the first section, "the nature is precisely the Śūraṅgama" unites the names to reveal it: although the two names differ, when united, their essence is not distinct, which is why it says "is precisely." "The nature is like ghee" distinguishes the nature to which it is equated: nature pervades cause and fruit; the cause is like milk and curds, while the fruit is like ghee; because the nature is precisely the Śūraṅgama, this must be distinguished. "It is precisely the mother of all buddhas" reveals the function of the nature and establishes that it is precisely the Śūraṅgama. "Śūraṅgama" is translated here as "all matters accomplished." Because the buddha-nature is indeed the mother of all buddhas and can generate all the virtues of the buddhas, it can precisely be the Śūraṅgama's "all matters accomplished." "Because of the Śūraṅgama, all buddhas are made permanent, blissful, self, and pure" reveals the function of the Śūraṅgama Samādhi and establishes that it is precisely the buddha-nature. Because the Śūraṅgama can make all buddhas permanent, blissful, self, and pure, it is precisely the meaning of the buddha-nature being the mother of buddhas.
