The preceding [section] was the first, which explained that those who regress will ultimately attain the fruit. Next below is the second, which explains the practice that is undertaken. Siṃhanāda first asked, "Why is it that having regressed, one ultimately attains non-regression?" Below, the Buddha explains it for him. Therein, first he generally adduces and praises [it]: "If one cultivates the causes and conditions of the karma of the thirty-two marks, one is named 'non-regressing'" is the general adduction. "Named bodhisattva" and below is the praise of superiority. One who cultivates this karma is called a "sentient being of the path" (dao zhongsheng); hence they are named "bodhisattva". One who is great among those born of the path is named "mahāsattva", and so forth. Firmly guarding the correct path is called "unshakeable". Being able to gather bodhi and benefit sentient beings is called "pitying all". Surpassing the two vehicles is called "surpassing all śrāvakas and pratyekabuddhas". Having no further regression or loss is called "avivartika". Next, he shows these individually, and afterward he concludes with general praise.
