Below, it explains lack of faith, in which there are four distinct parts: First, it briefly explains lack of faith: "foolish" means having no understanding; "breaking the precepts" means having no practice; "prone to giving rise to disputes" means defaming the correct and establishing the deviant. "Abandoning the twelve divisions and reciting non-Buddhist classics" reveals the preceding foolishness; "receiving and hoarding impure things" reveals the preceding breach of precepts; "claiming that the Buddha permitted this" reveals the preceding disputes. Second, he rebukes them to reveal their faults, first opening five gateways and later extensively explaining them. Third, from "Because of such evil bhikṣus..." onward, it extensively explains lack of faith, wherein it first explains harming those who uphold the Dharma and desiring to set up regulations to obstruct others from studying; from "Why is this?" onward, it states right as wrong, first generally negating, and from "Wherefore..." onward explaining, with five clauses in the explanation. Fourth, from "These persons..." onward, it concludes the answer to the preceding question; from "If there are sentient beings who have faith in this sūtra..." onward explains the persons of faith; from "those who understand half a verse, either permanent or abiding..." onward, within the receptive understanding, understanding one verse means understanding permanence and abiding. "This is called the tenth" concludes the preceding virtues from afar.
