From "For many years I constantly together with..." onward, he turns back to answer the third [phrase], clarifying the reasons for declaring that Sunakkhatta is an icchantika who will dwell in hell. In this there are four parts: first, clarifying that for many years he gathered and transformed him without success; second, that because he could not be transformed, he was declared to be an icchantika who would dwell in hell for a kalpa; third, clarifying the purpose of making this declaration; fourth, clarifying that this declaration is not false. In the first part, "accompanied him for many years" refers to the Buddha gathering him as an attendant for twenty years, hence "many years." In the second part, first is the doctrinal explanation, next the metaphor, and then the application. In the doctrinal explanation, it first clarifies that when there is good, he does not make such a declaration, and from "because he proclaimed..." onward, because there is no good, he makes the declaration; the metaphor and application are also like this. In the third part, Kāśyapa first asks, "For what reason was it prophesied and declared?" The Buddha's answer can be understood. In the fourth part, it first clarifies that the Tathāgata's words are never twofold, and from "śrāvakas..." onward, he adduces the inferior to reveal the superior.
