Below, the Buddha answers him. The text is divided into three parts: first, clarifying that there is severance; second, from "Just as a person..." onward, clarifying that a person who has severed good has both salvable and unsalvable aspects; third, from "Just as a decayed and ruined..." onward, clarifying that the severed good has both arisable and unarisable aspects. In the first part, one should first clarify the meaning of severing good, and then explain the text. The meaning has ten headings: First, clarifying the characteristics of severance. Severance has three paths: first, the preparatory path, contemplating that cause and effect exist and taking this to be wrong, and contemplating that cause and effect do not exist and taking this to be right; second, the unobstructed path, viewing existence as wrong; third, the path of liberation, viewing non-existence as right. The unobstructed path and the path of liberation each have nine grades, starting from the lowest of the low up to the highest of the high, similar to the severance of fetters through conventional knowledge.
