Second, knowing the arising of goodness. "The Tathāgata further knows that this person presently..." and so forth is the dharma statement that clearly explains it. Next it is clarified by analogy: "spring" illustrates bodhi; "village" illustrates birth-and-death; apart from birth-and-death is just bodhi, hence it says "not far." The pure and wondrous quality of the fruit is called "sweet and delicious"; the full perfection of all practices is called "possessing the eight virtues." The person who gives rise to good loathes existence, which is called "fevered"; seeking to escape is called "thirsty"; generating the mind to proceed toward it is called "wishing to go." "The wise person" illustrates the Buddha, who knows they will definitely go, hence it says "without doubt." "Why is this?" and what follows explains it. The application below can be understood.
