The eighteenth section clarifies the meaning of whether beings of the two vehicles can attain buddhahood or not. First, the aspects of the dispute are distinguished; the aspects of the dispute can be known. Next, the principle must be discussed: they both do and do not become buddhas; clinging to the small, they do not become buddhas, but letting go of the small, they do become buddhas. Since the meaning encompasses both, one must not be one-sidedly attached. The text first clarifies becoming buddhas. 'One vehicle' means that the practice of the vehicle is one. 'One path' means that the dharma of the path is one. 'One practice' is the essence of the vehicle. 'One condition' is the essence of the dharma of the path: dharma is the condition for practice, hence it is called 'condition'. Drawing from the great to subsume the small, because it is solely one, all shall become buddhas. The foolish hear this and do not understand, so they say that they definitely will become buddhas. The Tathāgata also taught that srotāpannas and others attain minor nirvāṇa; the foolish do not understand, so they say that beings of the two vehicles definitely do not become buddhas.
