The nineteenth section analyzes and clarifies the meaning of buddha-nature as identical [to the skandhas] or separate [from them]. First, the aspects of the dispute are distinguished: some declare that the marks of the five aggregates are identical to buddha-nature, while others say it is separate. Next, the principle must be discussed: in principle, buddha-nature is neither identical nor separate. Because the reality is not the same as the marks, it is called 'not identical'; because the marks are truly the nature and do not exist outside of the marks, it is called 'not separate'. Since the principle is like this, one must not be one-sidedly attached. The text only explains the teaching that nature is not identical, upon hearing which ordinary people raise disputes. The side of 'not separate' is omitted and not cited. If one wished to analyze it further, it would not differ from the subsequent sections; for this reason it is not discussed. In explaining 'not identical', there are four subdivisions: first, six aspects of the nature are taught, which people take to be definitely separate; second, the nature is taught to be like space, which people take to be definitely separate; third, the nature is taught to be like a hidden treasure in a house, which people take to be definitely separate; fourth, it is taught that those who violate the prohibitions, icchantikas, and others all have buddha-nature, which people take to be definitely separate.
