In clarifying their future having, Kāśyapa first asks: If the fifth, sixth, seventh, and so on exist in the future but are lacking in the present, how can it be said that one who has severed wholesome [roots] has the nature? The Buddha's reply has two parts: first, looking toward the fruitional aggregates, he clarifies that in the future the icchantika will sever delusion and attain clear and distinct vision, and therefore is said to "have" it; second, from "therefore" downward, looking toward the wholesome five aggregates, he clarifies that the icchantika's future buddha-nature will again produce wholesome roots, and therefore is said to "have" it. In the former part, first is a simile: "There is past karma that receives its fruit in the present," which illustrates and clarifies that the icchantika's future attainment is called "having." The icchantika's future cultivation of the wholesome five aggregates is called "past karma"; obtaining the fruitional five aggregates is called "obtaining the retributive fruit." From "there is future" downward, the simile clarifies that the icchantika has not yet attained it in the present. "There is future karma" illustrates that the icchantika will give rise to the wholesome aggregates in the future. "Because it has not yet arisen, it never produces fruit" illustrates that because the icchantika in the past did not complete the wholesome five aggregates, in the present they have not yet obtained the buddha-fruit's five aggregates. Below, the application reveals the dharma. "Having present afflictions makes clear it is not obtained in the present" matches "future karma, because it has not yet arisen, never produces fruit." "If there were no afflictions, everyone should clearly and distinctly see the nature" clarifies that the icchantika will see it in the future and thus is called "having," matching "having past karma and receiving retribution in the present."
