The preceding directly distinguishes the existence and non-existence of milk and curd; below it reveals it with reference to the four conditions producing consciousness. In this, it first clarifies the four conditions producing consciousness, and afterwards reveals milk and curd. In the former, it first states: "Four conditions produce consciousness: eye, form, light, and desire," adducing the subject matter of the analogy. Next, with reference to this matter, it clarifies neither-existence-nor-non-existence: "the nature of this eye-consciousness is not the eye, form," and so forth, clarifies that it is not existent; "arising from combination" indicates that it is not non-existent. "Such an eye-consciousness is originally non-existent and now existent, and having existed, becomes non-existent again; therefore one should know that it has no original nature" explains the preceding 'not existent'; 'not non-existent' is easy to know, so it is briefly omitted without explanation.
