五「若言鹽」下，明慧性滅，不能滅他。先舉直非，「若言鹽醎令異物醎」，舉他立喻。「慧滅亦爾」，舉他法說。「不然」總非。「何以」下釋。慧性自滅，云何滅他？「以是」下結。

Fifth, from "If one says that salt..." downward, it clarifies that the nature of wisdom is itself cessation and cannot cause others to cease. First, it directly negates: "If one says that the saltiness of salt causes other things to be salty": this cites the opponent's established simile. "The cessation of wisdom is also like this": this cites the opponent's doctrinal statement. "Not so" generally negates it. From "Why..." downward is the explanation. The nature of wisdom is itself cessation; how could it cause others to cease? From "Because of this..." downward is the conclusion.
