Third, it explains that their hearing is not complete. "Faith and precepts being incomplete, hearing is also incomplete" repeats what precedes to initiate what follows, stating the incompleteness generally. Below, it distinguishes this specifically through four repetitions: 1. Explaining incomplete hearing with respect to the twelve divisions of scripture: "believing only in six divisions, not believing in six divisions." Even though it says six divisions, discussing it according to the true principle, whatever is not believed among the twelve is called incomplete. 2. "Although receiving six divisions, unable to recite them or explain them for others" is called incomplete hearing. 3. "Although receiving six divisions, doing so only for the sake of debate or overcoming others," etc., is called incomplete hearing. 4. Drawing near to friends, hearing the Dharma, contemplating, practicing in accordance with the teaching up to liberation: lacking these is called incomplete hearing. Within this, it first presents complete hearing; from "this person lacks" onward, it contrasts it to reveal incomplete hearing. In the former part, first stating "I say hearing is complete" introduces it generally. From "how" onward is the distinction: first a question, then the explanation. Within that, it first explains drawing near to good friends; from "these teachers, regarding this person" onward explains hearing the true Dharma; from "having attained wisdom, being able to contemplate well" onward is fixing mindfulness and contemplating; from "having attained the correct meaning, body and mind are tranquil" explains practicing in accordance with the teaching. Within this are six clauses whose order is clear. Below, contrasting with the preceding meaning, it explains incomplete hearing, whose characteristics are also recognizable.
