3.44

From here below, the second section exhorts people to rely [upon them] and instructs people to make offerings. First it exhorts relying upon them to gather wisdom; from 'You should make offerings to such persons' below, it instructs people to make offerings to gather merit. In the former there are two parts: first, instructing people to test and verify; second, from 'After my nirvāṇa there will be immeasurable hundreds of thousands of sentient beings who slander...' below, it exhorts people to rely [upon them]. In the making of offerings below there are also these two, which will be explained at the proper time. In the first part, instructing them to test, it first instructs testing and verifying; second, from 'This Mahānirvāṇa cannot be consumed...' below, it praises the sutra's superiority, causing people to cultivate and practice, subjugate Māra, and rely on the correct.
