5.3

Among the practices of following conditions, the five practices are prior to the grounds (bhūmi), and the ten virtues are on the grounds. How is this known? Below, it states that the fruits accomplished by the five practices are all on the grounds, by which one determines that the five practices are prior to the grounds; below, in speaking of the ten virtues, it says that they are not worldly dharmas, and that they are absent in the world makes it clear they are on the grounds. The previous clarification of the five practices answers the earlier question of how to approach the unsurpassable path, taking the subsequent ten virtues as the unsurpassable path: how does one approach it? Below, it discriminates how the five practices are capable of accomplishing those virtues, and hence one can approach it. Among the five practices, it first discriminates noble practice, and consequently designates the chapter title as 'Chapter on Noble Practice.'
