In the former, there is first a question, next an analysis, and finally a conclusion. In the analysis, "knowing that the generation of the mind of faith is accomplished" explains the previous "if the mind seeks the Mahāyāna"; it cuts off the previous "if the faculties"; relying on faculties to proceed toward dharmas is therefore called seeking. The vehicle and faculties differ, and what is proceeded toward is diverse; here it mentions seeking the Mahāyāna, leaving aside the Hīnayāna. "This person follows [the stream]," and so forth, explains the preceding "if dhyāna, if the vehicle": following the stream is dhyāna; going against the stream, standing upright, and reaching the shore are the previous vehicle. Cultivating the eight mundane dhyānas is the dharma of ordinary persons; conforming to birth and death, it is therefore called following the stream. Cultivating the noble path to transcend birth and death is therefore called going against the stream, up to reaching the shore. The explanation below may be understood.
