In the third section, he resolves the previous objections raised regarding the inferior person. The objections are six in number, but the Buddha resolves only four; because the fourth objection is the same as the second and the fifth objection is the same as the first, there is no separate explanation [for them]. In explaining the first objection, he clarifies that regarding the icchantika person, there are meanings of both attaining and not attaining buddhahood: if they abandon the icchantika mind, they immediately attain buddhahood; if they do not abandon it, they do not attain it; one cannot say that they definitely attain it unequivocally. Here, he first explains that the icchantika also attains it; 'Why is this?' and so forth explains, 'Because generating the mind of bodhi is not [being] an icchantika.' Below, he explains that they do not attain it; 'For what reason is it said that the icchantika attains it?' questions King of Virtue's earlier assertion of attainment; 'In truth, they do not attain it' directly explains non-attainment; from 'Like the exhaustion of life' downward, metaphors illustrate non-attainment.
