In the first round, the distinct objective spheres are numerous, as explained in a separate chapter; however, for now we discuss them in terms of phenomenal dharmas. Phenomenal dharmas are all-encompassing, but we speak for now in terms of form. Settling the mind on the phenomenal matter of form is called samādhi, like the eight mundane dhyānas. "If one can contemplate form as permanent, impermanent, and so forth, this is called the characteristic of wisdom." Cultivating concentration and wisdom equally and abandoning biased practice is called the "characteristic of equanimity". Within this, first is the doctrine, next is the simile, and last is the application.
