12.21

「復次善男子」下，有兩譬，是第二說教之人。文為兩：先譬昔教主、後譬今教主。上十二譬亦爾，前一譬譬昔教、後十一譬譬今教。初中昔教云八術，今云過八。又下文中合譬，皆以佛菩薩合之，以是得知譬今昔教主。

From "Furthermore, good son" onward are two similes, which are the second [part], the person expounding the teaching. The text has two [parts]: first illustrating the former teacher, and next illustrating the present teacher. The twelve similes above are also like this: the first simile illustrates the former teaching, and the eleven subsequent similes illustrate the present teaching. In the first, the former teaching is said to have eight arts; now it is said to exceed eight. Furthermore, in the applications of the similes in the text below, they are all applied to Buddhas and bodhisattvas; through this one knows they illustrate the former and present teachers.
