From "Just as a great ship" onward is the fifth [part] of the chapter, answering the earlier question of how to act as a helmsman in the great ocean of saṃsāra. The earlier answer on eliminating obstacles was only untying one's own bonds; the present answer on the helmsman is being able to untie the bonds of others. The earlier was at the time of the cause, relying on the sūtra to obtain the power of one's own practice; the present is at the time of the fruit, relying on the sūtra to have the power of converting others. The earlier was the power of the Dharmakāya Sugata; the present is the power of the Nirmāṇakāya responding and arriving. The text adduces four similes: the first two similes are the direct answer, and the latter two similes praise the sūtra to assist the answer. Regarding the first, it clarifies the ship but not yet the helmsman; the latter simile fully clarifies the helmsman and the people ferried across. The ship illustrates nirvāṇa; the helmsman is the master of conversion; the people ferried across are those receiving conversion. The two similes of the wind and the king of winds both praise the scriptural teaching, as in the text.
