From "Excellent, excellent!" below, the second part clarifies yielding and submitting. In this, the manifestation of his traces and planting of causes were long ago, while in the Present Aeon his completion [of the path] was recent (and so forth). Lingwei used this single person as a rule for all nine non-Buddhists, holding that all of them were provisional manifestations. Master Guan did not accept that all were such, saying: If, seeing one person manifest traces, one generalizes that the other nine were not real [non-Buddhists], one could also say that the nine were real and conversely generalize that this one was not provisional. The various masters merely stated that he realized the fruit, without clarifying that it was a trace. Since this person wished to know the city and know the path, acting as his own gatekeeper, having already brought forth the great resolve, this was no minor matter. One should judge in accord with the text; one need not generalize across all.
