There are three kinds of resting: first, resting the afflictions of cause and fruit. Second, resting all activities. As for all activities, the text says: “Although one attains dhyāna, wisdom, and liberation, it is not called ultimate; if one can sever and eliminate the activities practiced in the thirty-seven factors, it is then called ultimate nirvāṇa.” The former masters definitively said it cannot be translated, fully as challenged before. Now, to definitively say again that it can be translated is also investigated by them: Master Rui’s Preface to the Pañcaviṃśati says: “What is erroneous in the Qin language is determined by characters and meanings; what is defective in foreign sounds is corrected by Indian [standards]; that which cannot be altered is transcribed and produced.” Now, since it was produced as nirvāṇa, it is untranslatable; how can you say it is translatable?
