Now I further make distinct objections with two points: translating as cessation by Daosheng, Sengzhao, and others is one objection; translating as liberation and freedom from defilement by Master Zong and others is another objection. If you say that nirvāṇa translates as liberation, then when the spirit reposes free from defilement, why should there be sorrow and grief? Furthermore, it says that the extinction of the fire of defilements is called extinction and crossing over, and freedom from initial and sustained thought is called nirvāṇa. Since nirvāṇa and extinction and crossing over both appear distinctly, one knows that extinction and crossing over is not used to translate nirvāṇa. Yet masters such as Daosheng and Sengzhao personally received instruction from Master Kumārajīva and translated together; how could there be errors for later scholars to criticize?
