Refuting the first school: to say that both ultimate truth and nirvāṇa do not transcend contradicts the sūtra text. The sūtra says: 'Nirvāṇa is not a name; one forcibly makes a name for it.' It also says: 'It is neither name nor mark, neither relative nor non-relative.' How can you say they do not transcend? If you say that nirvāṇa lacking the names of saṃsāra constitutes transcendence, then saṃsāra should also lack the name of nirvāṇa, and saṃsāra would also transcend. If mutual absence constitutes mutual transcendence, then mutual absence should also constitute mutual wonder. Can there be mutual wonder? Mutual transcendence?! Furthermore, Master Zhao, relying on the *Nirvāṇa Treatise*, clarifies that nirvāṇa is nameless; how could nirvāṇa not transcend? This, then, violates the old teachings of Guanhe and also contradicts the authentic text of the *Nirvāṇa Sūtra*.
