One says: The Buddha-fruit only exhausts coarse form, but possesses wondrous form. Hence the sūtra states: "Abandoning impermanent form, one obtains permanent form." Also, the six-fascicle [version] states: "Wondrous form is calm, tranquil, and permanently secure." Furthermore, the sūtra states: "Liberation has two substances: first, form; second, formless." The formless is the liberation of śrāvakas; form is the liberation of all Buddhas. The second says: The Buddha-fruit has no form. Form is an inert, obstructive dharma that cannot be refined; when one advances to the Buddha-fruit, wondrous wisdom alone remains, without "form" or "non-manifesting [action]." —As for the sūtra speaking of "wondrous form," this has two meanings: first, it can respond by manifesting inexhaustible forms; second, because the wondrous fruit is manifest, it is called form. —Hence the Six-Fascicle Sūtra states: "May all sentient beings extinguish all form and enter the formless Great Parinirvāṇa."
