何故名如來藏？為當眾生藏如來，名「如來藏」；為當如來自藏，名「如來藏」耶？然只此間，則是解竟，然具此二義：一者、眾生性顛倒隱覆如來性，故名「如來藏」；二者、眾生不堪聞如來之性，隱而不說，亦名「如來藏」。

Why is it named "tathāgatagarbha"? Is it named "tathāgatagarbha" because sentient beings conceal the Tathāgata, or is it named "tathāgatagarbha" because the Tathāgata conceals himself? In fact, precisely herein the explanation is complete, for it possesses both meanings: first, the perversions in the nature of sentient beings obscure and conceal the nature of the Tathāgata, and therefore it is named "tathāgatagarbha"; second, sentient beings are incapable of hearing the nature of the Tathāgata, so it is concealed and not spoken, and thus it is also named "tathāgatagarbha".
