今教顯一切眾生皆有佛性，佛性是「我」義。眾生依方等大教臨度斷除顛倒，則顯如來藏。藏顯則名法身。顯眾生有佛性，則顯眾生是佛性根本。眾生是佛故有佛性，非佛則不得有佛性。如人姓張，郎則有張姓，非張則不得有張姓，佛性亦爾。

Now the teaching reveals that all sentient beings possess Buddha-nature, and Buddha-nature has the sense of "self". When sentient beings rely on the great teaching of the Vaipulya scriptures and approach liberation, severing and eliminating perversions, then the tathāgatagarbha is revealed. When the treasury is revealed, it is named the dharmakāya. Revealing that sentient beings have Buddha-nature reveals that sentient beings are the root of Buddha-nature. Because sentient beings are Buddhas, they have Buddha-nature; if they were not Buddhas, they could not have Buddha-nature. Just as when a person's family name is Zhang, that young man possesses the surname Zhang, but if he were not a Zhang he could not possess the surname Zhang—Buddha-nature is also like this.
