For instance, hearing that Buddha-nature is named the emptiness of the ultimate truth, they offer various explanations: some say it is named after the cognitive object, while others say it is precisely the ultimate truth. They say: Buddha-nature is wisdom, and the emptiness of the ultimate truth is the cognitive object, but since wisdom is precisely the cognitive object, it is said that Buddha-nature is named the emptiness of the ultimate truth. Furthermore, they say: Buddha-nature is conventional truth, but since conventional is precisely ultimate, it is said that Buddha-nature is named the emptiness of the ultimate truth. Now we clarify that these statements are insufficient. Buddha-nature is named the emptiness of the ultimate truth; the wise see emptiness as well as non-emptiness—only this forms a complete proposition. Therefore, from the very outset, our position differs from that of others.
