The Commentary says: This explains the possession of good. There are three points: First, constantly giving rise to right view, which counters the previous wrong views. Second, accomplishment of retinue, which counters the previous not practicing evil disciplines; for those with evil disciplines have evil retinues. Third, not slandering the Three Jewels, which counters the previous not falling into dark places and not being born in borderlands, because they constantly meet the Three Jewels and give rise to faith and devotion toward them. Not only is the middle grade free from the four evils and possessed of the three goods, but the higher and lower grades also have them accordingly. In order to explain that those who hear the name transform the different forms of the eight classes and receive the superior bodies of the four kinds of birth, this is explained exclusively with regard to the middle grade.
