Fourth, to make clear the benefits obtained upon being born [there]: taking this sūtra as the basis, the benefits obtained are two: first, the benefit of eradicating sin; second, the benefit of hearing the Dharma. In the first, there are six: First, obtaining benefit through taking refuge: as the sūtra says, "By contemplating attentively the white ūrṇā between the eyebrows, sins of birth-and-death spanning nine billion kalpas are eliminated." Second, obtaining benefit through paying homage: as the sūtra says, "If one pays homage to Maitreya Bodhisattva, sins of birth-and-death spanning ten billion kalpas are eliminated." Third, obtaining benefit through hearing the name: as the sūtra says, "Merely hearing Maitreya's name, one will not fall into marginal lands, wrong views, or evil vows of conduct." Fourth, obtaining benefit through extinguishing sin: as the sūtra says, "Hearing Maitreya's name, clasping one's hands, and being respectful eliminates sins of birth-and-death spanning fifty kalpas." Fifth, obtaining benefit through hearing and reciting [the name]: as the sūtra says, "If for a single thought-moment one recites Maitreya's name, sins of birth-and-death spanning one thousand two hundred kalpas are eliminated." Sixth, obtaining benefit through repenting faults: as the sūtra says, "If men or women violate the prohibitive precepts and commit various evil deeds, upon hearing the name of Maitreya of Great Compassion, if they cast their five limbs to the ground and sincerely repent, they will swiftly attain purity." Second, regarding the benefit of hearing the Dharma, there are three: First, the benefit of hearing the Dharma: as the sūtra says, "At that time the Bodhisattva, in accordance with their past karmic affinities, preaches the Dharma for them, and they do not turn back from the supreme aspiration for awakening." Second, the benefit of meeting the sages; herein are three: 1. the benefit of meeting the sage in the present [life]: as the sūtra says, "Because of meeting Maitreya"; 2. the benefit of meeting the sages in subsequent births: as the sūtra says, "Meeting all the Buddhas of the Bhadrakalpa"; 3. the benefit of meeting the sages later on: as the sūtra says, "In the future, meeting Buddhas [as numerous as] the sands of the Gaṅgā." Third, the benefit of receiving vyākaraṇa; herein are two: first, vyākaraṇa from Maitreya: as the sūtra says, "If one takes refuge in Maitreya Bodhisattva when he attains Buddhahood, upon seeing the Buddha's light, one will receive vyākaraṇa"; second, vyākaraṇa from all Buddhas: as the sūtra says, "Meeting all Buddhas in the Constellation Kalpa, one receives vyākaraṇa before all the Buddhas."
