Fifth, explaining the main text: herein are three: first, contemplating the practices for being born there; next, the assembly making vows; last, concluding with right contemplation. In the first are also three: first, cultivating causes to attain rebirth; next, exhorting refuge in the sage to gain benefit; last, taking refuge in the sage to extinguish sin. The first also has three: first, rebirth through upper-grade causes; next, rebirth through middle-grade causes; last, rebirth through lower-grade causes. In the first are six: 1. revealing the cultivation of causes; 2. instructing the dedication of vows; 3. the actual rebirth; 4. the devas praising and taking refuge; 5. gaining benefits upon being born there; 6. the general conclusion. This is the first. The words "cultivating various merits" are the general statement. From "deportment" onward are the explanatory phrases, which constitute the causes of the six matters: First, the practice of discussing precepts, meaning that deportment is unbroken. Second, the practice of venerating stūpas, meaning sweeping stūpas and plastering the ground. Third, the practice of making offerings, meaning famous incense and wonderful flowers. Fourth, the practice of samādhi, meaning entering right absorption in various samādhis. Fifth, the practice of reciting sūtras from memory. Sixth, the practice of reading sūtras. These six practices comprise three: the first three are the practice of precepts, wherein the first is the precept-practice of ceasing evil, and the latter two are the precept-practices of performing [good]; the next one is the practice of concentration; the latter two are the practice of wisdom. "Right absorption" (samāpatti) is another name for concentration. If one cultivates the six or five practices, it is the cause for birth of the upper-upper grade; if one cultivates three or four practices, it is the cause for birth of the upper-middle grade; if one cultivates one or two practices, it is the cause for birth of the upper-lower grade.
