Question: How is it known that one kalpa of formation and destruction constitutes the span of the Bhadrakalpa? Answer: The *Bodhisattvagarbhasūtra* says: "Even if the six deva kings and others filled the four continents, it would not equal the merit of a Mahābrahmā deva, up to his lifespan exceeding the Bhadrakalpa, after which his life finally ends." Explaining this: since the lifespan of a Brahmā king is sixty kalpas, and it is said to exceed the Bhadrakalpa, how could one speak of many kalpas of formation and destruction? Furthermore, the *Mahāprajñāpāramitopadeśa* says: "In the previous ninety kalpas three Buddhas appeared, and in the latter one kalpa one thousand Buddhas appear." Explaining this: the "latter one kalpa" is the ninety-first kalpa, in the beginning of which four Buddhas appeared, as cited above. It is called "one kalpa" because a formation and destruction constitutes one kalpa.
