Third, the sequence of the kalpas. Question: Is the sequence of these three kalpas immediately consecutive or not? Answer: One view says: Looking from the Vyūhakalpa toward the Bhadrakalpa, they must certainly be immediately consecutive. Therefore, the Bhaiṣajyasamudgata Sūtra states: 'Of the thousand buddhas of the Vyūhakalpa, the first to attain [buddhahood] was named Buddha Prabhāsa, and the last to attain [buddhahood] was named Buddha Vipaśyin.' An explanation says: This is because Vipaśyin is the buddha in the thirty-first kalpa among the preceding ninety kalpas. After this kalpa, no separate kalpa is spoken of until the ninety-first kalpa, when the Bhadrakalpa is spoken of. Hence we know that the time going back through the preceding ninety kalpas is called the Vyūhakalpa. If looking from the Bhadrakalpa toward the Constellation Kalpa, it is said that the explanations vary. For the Mahāprajñāpāramitā Sūtra, fascicle nine, states: 'The Buddha addressed Ānanda, saying: "Immeasurable bhikṣus arising from this assembly, sixty-one kalpas from now, during the Constellation Kalpa, shall attain buddhahood, all having the same name, Mahādhvajalakṣaṇa Tathāgata."' An explanation says: If relying on this text, sixty-one kalpas constitute the measure of the Constellation Kalpa, and all [time] prior to the Constellation Kalpa is called the Bhadrakalpa. The Bhadrakalpika Sūtra, fascicle ten, states: 'Pusheng says that the wheel-turning sage king was Dīpaṃkara Tathāgata, and his one thousand sons are the one thousand buddhas in the Bhadrakalpa. After the one thousand buddhas have passed, know that for sixty-five kalpas there will be no buddha. Then there will be a great kalpa measured as the Mahāyaśas Kalpa, in which all together shall attain right awakening. After this kalpa has passed, for eighty kalpas no buddha will arise at all. Then there will be a kalpa called Constellation-Analogue, during which his eighty thousand ministers shall attain right awakening. After the Constellation Kalpa has passed, for three hundred kalpas likewise no buddha will arise. Then there will be a kalpa called Doubly Pure, during which his eighty-four thousand palace women shall attain right awakening in that kalpa.' An explanation says: If relying on this text, after the Bhadrakalpa there is the Mahāyaśas Kalpa, and only then is there the Constellation Kalpa in which eighty thousand buddhas appear in the world.
