From the sūtra's words 'The Buddha addressed Upāli: After the Buddha's parinirvāṇa' onward, this is the third part, taking refuge in the holy one and eradicating transgressions. As for 'the ten virtuous practices', thinking and speaking are considered practice; if they are serious, they become the path of ten virtuous actions. As for 'seeing a deva', whenever one encounters a sentient being, one should immediately think of what Maitreya contemplates: namely, causing those who suffer to be freed from it, causing those without joy to obtain it, causing the evil to be eliminated, causing the good to be gathered in, and so forth. As for 'a lotus flower', whenever one encounters a phenomenon, one should immediately think of Maitreya's wondrous Dharma. Here, just mentioning one sentient being and one phenomenon brings Maitreya to mind; such an intention illustrates making the cause for ascent. As for eradicating the transgressions of one thousand two hundred kalpas, this is brought about by the power of Maitreya's great vow; therefore, merely contemplating him in thought eradicates the transgressions of one thousand two hundred kalpas for a person. If a person performs bodily actions but their head does not touch the ground, they eradicate the transgressions of fifty kalpas. If a person's head touches the ground, they eradicate the transgressions of one hundred koṭis of kalpas. This third person continues day and night, and over a long period, their refuge with body, mind, and so on is entirely profound. As for 'even if they are not born in heaven', because their karmic power for heavenly birth is not yet fulfilled and their wholesome causes are not yet fulfilled, they will produce the aspiration in the three assemblies under the dragon-flower tree. As for practitioners of the previous three grades, their karmic power can be fulfilled. The differences here are solely due to the superiority or inferiority of their cultivation of contemplation.
