From where the sūtra states "the past Buddhas..." onward is the second, specifically revealing [the sagely qualities]. Here there are three parts: first, revealing the wisdom regarding past Buddhas; next, revealing the wisdom regarding the present world; afterwards, revealing the wisdom regarding the future. This is the first. Regarding "clan" (姓), Vipaśyin Buddha arose from the kṣatriya clan, Krakucchanda Buddha arose from the brāhmaṇa clan, and so forth. Regarding "style-name" (字), this is the name [given at] twenty years [of age]. Regarding "name" (名), this is the name [given at] birth. Regarding "epithets" (號), these are the ten epithets. "Disciples" refers to the śrāvakas. Because they assist and flank the Buddha, they are called "attendants." Regarding "many or few": Vipaśyin Buddha had three assemblies for expounding the Dharma, namely, first 168,000 people, next 100,000 people, and last 80,000 people. Śikhin Buddha also had three assemblies: first 100,000 people, next 80,000 people, and last 70,000 people. Viśvabhū Buddha had two assemblies: first 70,000 people, and last 60,000 people. Krakucchanda Buddha had one assembly expounding to 40,000 people. Kanakamuni Buddha had one assembly expounding to 30,000 people. Kāśyapa Buddha had one assembly of 30,000 people. Śākyamuni had one assembly of 1,250 people. The details are as found in the first fascicle of the *Dīrgha Āgama*. Regarding "one kalpa, a hundred kalpas," and so forth: this reveals wisdom regarding time. As the *Sūtra on the Woman Wujin Inviting the Buddha* states: "Since the first Buddha entered parinirvāṇa, ninety kalpas have passed; since the second Buddha entered parinirvāṇa, thirty-one kalpas have passed; since the third Buddha entered parinirvāṇa, also thirty-one kalpas have passed; up to, since Kāśyapa Buddha entered parinirvāṇa, ten thousand years have passed"—this is explained as the differences in temporal distance between the successive Buddhas of the seven generations. From "and also knows..." onward, the intention is to reveal knowledge of the assemblies being transformed; as the *Que Wujin Sūtra* states: "The first Buddha's father was named King Bopiāo Kṣatriya, and his mother was named Padmā... up to Kāśyapa Buddha's father was named Brahmadatta, and his mother was named Dhanavatī," and so forth.
