From the passage where the sūtra states "At that time Ānanda..." onward is the second [section], the section of broad exposition through question and answer. Here there are four parts: first, Ānanda presents his request; second, the Tathāgata consents to speak; third, Ānanda receives the instruction; fourth, the Tathāgata directly answers. Within the first, there are three: first, the etiquette; second, revealing the sagely [qualities]; third, presenting the request. This is the first. Baring the right shoulder reveals his ability to understand the Buddha's intent. Placing his knee on the ground reveals his ability to receive [the teaching]. From "addressed the World-Honoured One, saying" onward is the second, revealing the sagely [qualities]. This comprises two parts: first, revealing generally; second, revealing specifically. This is the first. The word "matters" directly refers to phenomena. "Future," etc., refers to time. Because he wished to ask about the matters of Maitreya's future transformation and guidance, it was necessary to reveal the wisdom that completely penetrates the three [times]. "Clearly perceives" (the pronunciation is ... discriminating [even what is] profoundly obscure).
