From where the sūtra states "At that time, the World-Honoured One addressed..." onward is the fourth, the Tathāgata's direct answer. Here there are two parts: first, the direct question and answer; second, exhorting the cultivation of causes. Within the first, there are four: first, answering about the abundance and joy of the realm; second, answering about the Buddha; third, answering about the disciples; fourth, answering about the time of extinction. Supernormal transformations are included within the answer regarding the disciples and followers, and therefore are not answered separately. Within the first, there are also four: first, the adornment of the country and cities; second, the vastness and beauty of the land; third, the harmony among the people; fourth, the supreme goodness of the king and ministers. This is the first. "Far distant": from the time this sūtra was spoken looking toward the time when Maitreya appears in the world, fifty-six hundred million years pass. Regarding "Jitou" (Ketumatī): Dharma Master Xuanzang said, "In the Western Regions it is said that Rājagṛha is the City of Fragrance. In the future there will be a king named Śaṅkha, whose great capital city will be named Jitoumo (Ketumatī), translated here as 'Banner of Wisdom'." Thus one knows that Ketumatī is within the territory of Rājagṛha; another says it is within the territory of Jambudvīpa, and this meaning is also without fault. The *Attainment of Buddhahood Sūtra* calls it "Chitoumo" (Ketumatī), which is the same. Regarding "city" (城): it means the residence of the king; where the populace dwells is called the "outer city" (郭). Because the city resembles a cock's head (jītou), it is named Ketumatī. "Twelve yojanas": although experiencing supreme recompense, they do not transcend the twelve links of dependent origination. "Seven yojanas": because they do not follow the seven latent tendencies. Regarding "streets and lanes" (街巷, [pronunciation glossed]): the *Attainment of Buddhahood Sūtra* states, "There is a great powerful dragon king named Lośikhi," which mutually reveals this. "Rākṣasa demons": translated here as "fearsome." The *Attainment of Buddhahood Sūtra* speaks of "great yakṣa spirits," which is mutually revealing, as that city has both yakṣa and rākṣasa spirits. Regarding "cleansing defilements after sleep": after people fall asleep, those spirits manifest to remove all foul defilements, competing to keep it pure.
