From where the sūtra states "Ānanda, you should know..." onward is the second, the vastness and beauty of the land. Regarding "a hundred thousand yojanas": the *Attainment of Buddhahood Sūtra* states, "At that time the land of Jambudvīpa will be ten thousand yojanas in length and eight thousand yojanas in width"; the sixth fascicle of the *Suvarṇaprabhāsa Sūtra* states, "The land of Jambudvīpa is seven thousand yojanas in length and breadth." Now it is said that when Maitreya first appears, the waters of the four seas will decrease greatly and the land will increase greatly, hence it says "a hundred thousand yojanas." Later, after a long time, the sea waters will increase again and the land will become narrow and short, so [the figures of] ten thousand and seven thousand do not contradict this. If there are conflicting texts, they can be understood according to this. "Each occupying one direction": because the waters of the sea each recede to one direction. Regarding "the various mountains melting away and being flat and level like a mirror": speaking in terms of factual reality, at that time there will still be mountains and rocks, but in comparison to the present, they are considered nonexistent. If this were not so, it would contradict the text below stating that "Mahākāśyapa dwells on this mountain."
