From the sūtra's words 'Not far from Ketumatī' onward, this is the fourth aspect, attaining awakening. Here there are three parts: first, explaining the attainment of awakening; next, the quaking of the lands; finally, the earth spirit's proclamation, which can be understood accordingly. Regarding 'attaining the fruit of the unexcelled Way', the Great Attainment of Buddhahood Sūtra says: 'Going to the bodhimaṇḍa, Maitreya immediately shaved his hair himself, went forth into homelessness, and studied the Way. That very day, in the first watch of the night, he subdued the four māras and attained unexcelled bodhi.' The explanation is: this sūtra intends the conclusion of subduing the māras to be called midnight, which is not contradictory.
