From the sūtra's words 'At that time human lifespan' onward, this is the third aspect, going forth into homelessness. Namely, the Sūtra on the Crown Prince's Five Dreams says: 'Maitreya attained the Way at the age of thirty, having never married'; he must have observed the faults of the five desires and took no pleasure in household life. However, the Bhadrakalpa Sūtra says: 'Maitreya had a son named Balasthāma.' This sūtra says that marrying takes place at five thousand years; how are these reconciled? Answer: The great holy one responds to beings, which is not an object of thought for ordinary persons or Śrāvakas. Therefore, although his age was thirty, he manifested the practice of marriage in order to give birth to Balasthāma; what fault is there? Question: If women marry after five thousand years of age, why does the Attainment of Buddhahood Sūtra say 'they marry at five hundred years'? Answer: One interpretation says that both the Āgama and the Great Attainment of Buddhahood Sūtra state that marriage takes place at five hundred years, so 'five thousand' is an error in wording. Another interpretation says: when Maitreya first appears in the world, they only marry at five thousand years; in later times, long afterward, they begin to marry at five hundred years. Since there is flourishing and decline, the beginning of marriage also has delays and haste. Regarding 'not long in the household': this is because he attained the Way at the age of thirty.
