Sixth, in explaining the main text, although they saw the light and the auspicious signs of the flowers, there were some who had not yet grasped the purport; hence the emanated Buddhas briefly proclaimed it. Regarding the proclamation of the emanated Buddhas: since this passage serves as an introductory explanation, the true Buddha's direct teaching constitutes the gradual approach. 'Herein there are a thousand bodhisattvas' reveals the future Buddhas of the Bhadrakalpa, meaning that Maitreya and the others presently reside [there]. One view holds that 'herein' refers to within Jambudvīpa. We now say this is not so, because it is in contrast to the Constellation Kalpa. 'Krakucchanda' is a Sanskrit sound, translated here as 'Golden Immortal', meaning that at the time of cultivating causes he was a golden-coloured ṛṣi. During this Buddha's time, the human lifespan was four thousand years, and his disciples at a single assembly of preaching the Dharma numbered forty thousand. Now the Sūtra on the Samādhi of Contemplating the Buddha states: 'The Buddha Krakucchanda was twenty-five yojanas tall, his halo thirty-two yojanas, and the light pervading his body fifty yojanas.' 'Rocana' (Rucika) was an older transcription, rendered here as 'Weeping'. The cause of his weeping is as told in the Vajrapāṇi Sūtra, which is an error. Master Xuanzang said: 'The Sanskrit pronunciation is Huluzhi, rendered here as 'Father's Beloved', meaning that being the youngest son, he was uniquely loved by his father.' Here, we merely cite the first and the last of the two Buddhas; the full explanation is as in the Bhadrakalpika Sūtra.
