1.56

第三辨總別者，有二對：一凡聖總別對，謂凡眾名總，唯云天等不表名故；聖眾名別，別名別故。二主伴總別對，謂聖眾中迦葉等名別，別名列故；眷屬名總，總表數故。有義：光所召，新舊眾皆盡。今不然，如下文十方菩薩，非此所列故。

Third is distinguishing the general and specific, in which there are two pairs: First, the contrast between ordinary and noble in general and specific: the names of the ordinary assembly are general, merely speaking of 'the devas and so on' without indicating individual names; the names of the noble assembly are specific, as distinct names are individually specified. Second, the contrast between principals and retinues in general and specific: among the noble assembly, Kāśyapa and the others are named specifically, as their distinct names are listed; their retinues are named generally, as only their total numbers are indicated. One view holds that those summoned by the light exhausted both the new and old assemblies. We now say this is not so, as the bodhisattvas of the ten directions mentioned below were not listed here.
