From the sūtra's words "At that time the World-Honoured One..." downward is the second [part], the response Buddha teaching the Dharma. Question: Why do the transformation Buddhas speak of the profound dhāraṇī gates? Answer: It was so that Bodhisattva Maitreya could attain the profound dhāraṇī gates. Question: Since the response Buddha's expounding of the dhāraṇī was already sufficient, why was it necessary for the transformation Buddhas to reiterate it? Answer: It was to provide confirmation that what is spoken by response and transformation [bodies] is not empty. In the *Lotus Sūtra*, still fearing that others would doubt, the Many Treasures Buddha Stūpa sprang forth to confirm and speak it. Furthermore, in the *Suvarṇaprabhāsa Sūtra*, fearing that others would not believe, the four Buddhas appeared to induce faith. Here it is also like this. As for "ten billion," Master Ji says: "[This refers to] the distinctions of the two total retentions of teaching and meaning." Now we say that since the sūtra merely says "ten billion" without excluding patient endurance and mantra, it applies without error to the distinctions of all four total retentions. Some sūtras say a hundred million, and some sūtras say a hundred trillion, which is probably incorrect, because all commentators explain it as ten billion.
